Answer to question 1. The text was encoded as a very long decimal expansion (e.g., `ABC' became `0.010203') and this was used to determine the placement of the groove.

Answer to question 2. Since iron bars are made out of atoms, the groove cannot be placed more precisely than an atomic radius, preventing more than a dozen or so digits from being stored in this way.
